Inherited a smart home? Here's what to do.

You bought a home with a smart system — Crestron, Control4, Savant, or Lutron — and the previous owner didn't leave the manual, didn't leave the installer's contact info, and the system does things you don't understand. Here's what to do.

Step 1: Don't panic (and don't reset anything)

The most common mistake is resetting the processor or factory-resetting devices to "start fresh." This erases all programming — the scenes, the integration, the custom settings that took dozens of hours to program. Don't reset anything until a professional has assessed the system and backed up the programming.

Step 2: Identify what you have

Find the equipment rack. Take photos of every piece of equipment, the labels on the wires, and the model numbers.

Step 3: Find the original installer

Check the equipment rack for a label with the installer's name. Check the real estate listing. Ask the previous owner's real estate agent.

Step 4: Call a professional

A certified installer can back up the current programming, assess what's working, identify capabilities, reprogram scenes, update firmware, and transfer the system to your account.
