Video walls: LED vs LCD for commercial spaces.

2026-09-22 · Obsidian Audio Video · Houston

Video walls have become standard in Houston commercial spaces — corporate lobbies, restaurants, sports bars, retail stores, and control rooms. The choice between LED and LCD determines cost, image quality, brightness, and maintenance for the next 5–10 years.

LCD video walls

  • Cost: $15,000–$50,000 for a 2×2 or 3×3 wall
  • Brightness: 500–700 nits (standard) or 1,500+ nits (high-brightness)
  • Bezel: Modern panels have <1mm bezels (nearly seamless)
  • Best for: Corporate lobbies, control rooms, conference rooms, restaurants

LED video walls

  • Cost: $30,000–$200,000+ depending on pixel pitch and size
  • Brightness: 800–2,500+ nits. Significantly brighter than LCD.
  • Seamless: No bezels. The image is continuous.
  • Best for: Retail, restaurants, outdoor installations, high-impact lobbies

Pixel pitch and viewing distance

  • P1.2: 4+ feet — fine detail, close viewing
  • P1.5: 5+ feet — good for most indoor applications
  • P1.8: 6+ feet — cost-effective for 8+ foot viewing
  • P2.5: 8+ feet — standard for large walls
  • P3.9: 13+ feet — outdoor and large-format
