Lutron RadioRA 3 vs HomeWorks QSX: which do you need?

Lutron makes two residential lighting control systems that often get confused: RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX. They look similar from the outside — both control lights, shades, and keypads from wall stations and apps — but they serve very different homes. Choosing the wrong one means either overspending or hitting system limits that force a full replacement.

RadioRA 3: the right system for most homes

RadioRA 3 is Lutron's mid-tier wireless system, designed for homes up to roughly 100 lighting loads. It uses Lutron's ClearConnect Type-X wireless protocol, which means no new wiring needs to be pulled to existing switch locations — the dimmers swap in where the old switches were. The main processor supports up to 100 devices, and a new installation with keypads, dimmers, and a few shade groups typically runs $15,000–$35,000 depending on scope.

RadioRA 3 replaced RadioRA 2 in 2022 and brought significant improvements: a faster processor, better app performance, support for HomeKit, Google Home, and Alexa out of the box, and a more streamlined programming interface. For most Houston homes — a 4,000–8,000 square foot house with 40–80 lighting loads, a few shade groups, and whole-home scenes — RadioRA 3 is the right system.

HomeWorks QSX: for large or complex homes

HomeWorks QSX is Lutron's flagship residential system, designed for homes with 100+ lighting loads or complex requirements: multi-processor installations, wired keypads, integration with Crestron or Control4, or extensive shade and relay control. It supports both wireless and wired (RAF) dimming modules, which means it can be retrofitted into existing homes or built into new construction with home-run wiring.

HomeWorks QSX also supports features RadioRA 3 doesn't: conditional programming (if/then logic), astronomic timeclock events with conditions, advanced load shedding, and unlimited keypads. The trade-off is cost — a HomeWorks QSX system typically starts at $40,000 and can exceed $100,000 for a large estate. Programming is also more complex, requiring a Lutron certified installer.

Which do you need?

If your home has fewer than 100 lighting loads, you want wireless (no new wiring), and you need standard scenes and app control — RadioRA 3.

If your home has 100+ loads, you want wired reliability, you need multi-processor support, or you're integrating with a full Crestron/Control4/Savant system — HomeWorks QSX.
