Motorized shades: what to know before you buy.

Motorized shades are one of the most popular smart home upgrades in Houston — and one of the most commonly poorly installed. The difference between shades that work flawlessly for years and shades that need constant service is almost entirely in the design phase, not the hardware.

Fabric matters more than motor

The motor gets the attention, but the fabric determines whether your shades actually perform. Houston's sun is intense year-round, and the wrong fabric turns a south-facing room into a greenhouse. There are three main fabric categories:

• Light-filtering: Diffuses light, maintains view, provides privacy. Good for living areas where you want natural light without glare.
• Room-darkening (blackout): Blocks 99%+ of light. Essential for bedrooms, media rooms, and home theaters. The fabric must be paired with a light-blocking cassette or side channels — otherwise light leaks around the edges.
• Sheer: Preserves view while reducing glare. Good for high-rise windows with a view you don't want to block.

For Houston's climate, dual-shade systems (one light-filtering + one blackout in the same window) give the most flexibility — but they require a deeper cassette and more headroom above the window.

Power: hardwire vs battery

Motorized shades need power, and the power source determines long-term reliability:

• Hardwired (24V DC): The gold standard. A low-voltage wire runs from each shade to a central power supply. No batteries to replace, no charging, maximum reliability. Requires pre-wiring during construction or retrofitting through attic/crawl spaces.
• Battery (rechargeable): Each shade has a rechargeable battery tube. Good for retrofit installations where running wire isn't possible. Batteries last 6–12 months per charge depending on how often shades move. The downside: you have to remember to charge them.
• Solar-powered: Small solar panel charges the battery. Works for south-facing windows with good sun exposure. Reduces charging frequency but doesn't eliminate it.

Control integration

Motorized shades are only useful if they integrate with the rest of your home. In Houston homes, we integrate shades with:

• Lutron RadioRA 3 / HomeWorks QSX: Native integration, the most reliable option if you have (or plan to add) Lutron lighting.
• Crestron / Control4 / Savant: Full integration with scenes — "Good Morning" raises shades and turns on lights; "Movie Time" drops shades and dims lights.
• App control: Lutron's app, the Crestron app, or the shade manufacturer's own app for individual control.
