You can spend $50,000 on speakers and a projector and still have a home theater that sounds terrible. The room — its dimensions, surfaces, and acoustic properties — has more impact on sound quality than any piece of equipment. A $10,000 system in a properly treated room will outperform a $50,000 system in an untreated room.
Why rooms sound bad
Sound bounces off every hard surface — walls, ceiling, floor, windows, glass. In an untreated room, these reflections create comb filtering, smearing imaging, and muddying dialogue.
Common room problems in Houston homes:
- Square or cube rooms: Equal dimensions create standing waves that cause boomy bass.
- Hard floors: Tile and hardwood floors create strong first reflections.
- Large windows: Glass reflects high frequencies and creates a harsh, bright sound.
- Low ceilings: Low ceilings create early reflections that muddy the midrange.
How to fix it
- First-reflection points: Treat the walls and ceiling where sound from each speaker first bounces. Use acoustic panels (2-inch fiberglass).
- Bass traps: Place bass traps in the corners of the room.
- Rug: A large area rug absorbs floor reflections.
- Rear wall diffusion: Diffusion scatters sound rather than absorbing it, maintaining liveliness.
