How many audio zones do you actually need?

The number of audio zones in a whole-home audio system determines the amplifier, the matrix switcher, the control system, and the cost. Too few zones and you're running speaker wire to areas that can't play independent music. Too many and you're paying for amplification and control hardware for zones you'll never use independently.
What is an audio zone?
A zone is a room or area that can play its own source at its own volume independently. If two rooms share a source and volume control, they're one zone — not two.
Common zone configurations
- 6 zones: Great Room, Kitchen, Master Bedroom, Outdoor Patio, Bathroom, Office. Minimum viable for a 3,000–4,000 sq ft home.
- 8–10 zones: Add Dining Room, Game Room, Guest Bedroom, Hallway, Garage. Typical for 4,000–6,000 sq ft.
- 12–16 zones: Add Walk-in Closet, Laundry Room, Lanai, Pool Deck, Exercise Room, Media Room, Study. For 6,000+ sq ft homes.
How to decide
Walk through your home and ask: "Would I ever want to listen to different music in this room than in the adjacent room?" If the answer is no — it's the same zone. If yes — it's a separate zone.
