Dolby Atmos speaker placement: getting it right.

Dolby Atmos added height channels to surround sound — sounds that move above you, not just around you. But Atmos only works if the height speakers are placed correctly. Bad placement makes Atmos sound like a gimmick. Good placement makes it feel like the sound is in the room.

The standard Atmos layout

• 5.1.2: 5 speakers + 1 sub + 2 height speakers. Minimum viable Atmos.
• 5.1.4: Same base + 4 height speakers. Better overhead imaging.
• 7.1.4: 7 base speakers + 4 height. The sweet spot for most dedicated theaters.

Height speaker placement

• In-ceiling speakers: The preferred option. Two or four speakers in the ceiling, positioned at roughly 45 degrees from the listener.
• Up-firing speakers: Speakers that sit on top of your floor speakers and bounce sound off the ceiling. Easier to install, but less precise.

The base layer matters more

Here's the secret of Atmos: the base layer (the 5 or 7) matters more than the height channels. A perfectly calibrated 5.1 system will sound better than a poorly calibrated 5.1.4 Atmos system.
